Press release, "Social inclusion and Roma empowerment in Satu Mare County"

The project "Social inclusion and empowerment of Roma in Satu Mare County", funded by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021, Program "Local development, poverty reduction and Roma inclusion" in the amount of 4.511.822,62, dedicated to 1300 Roma beneficiaries from all over Satu Mare County, is in its 17th month of implementation. So far, 4 activities have been finalized and the remaining 24 are ongoing, according to the project implementation schedule.

Completed activities include two authorized qualification courses and a campaign to raise awareness of equal opportunities on the labor market among the Roma population.

The health mediator course aimed to support public administration professionals in working with Roma by training 15 health mediators, including from the Roma community.

The community facilitator course, in the context of human rights advocacy, was addressed to Roma leaders, volunteers, experts from municipalities, who have the potential to support and motivate Roma communities. Facilitators will support members of a community to become aware of what is happening around them, to gain self-confidence, to work together and solve common needs; support them to mobilize, to see the problems, to prioritize them and to understand that he/she is with them without getting involved in their decisions and actions. Community facilitators help people to build trust in each other, to organize themselves and voluntarily work together to meet a common need.

Thus, following the two qualification courses, 30 people have acquired skills to support long-term Roma inclusion in 10 localities in Satu Mare county (Tășnad, Ardud, Andrid, Santău, Păulești, Turulung, Socond, Lazuri, Porumbești, Dolrolț).

Among the ongoing activities, or even in the finalization phase, there are activities to facilitate the maintenance of the target group in the project, educational activities for Roma people in vulnerable situations (adults and minors), facilitating access to employment, health services, purchase and provision of incentives for beneficiaries, purchase of communal bathrooms container type.

After the purchase of the 10 container-type communal bathrooms, equipped with showers, washing machines, clothes dryers, activities will be carried out to promote and facilitate compliance with basic hygiene rules. The beneficiaries will receive packages with personal hygiene, sanitary and cleaning materials, which they will be able to use in the communal bathrooms for personal hygiene and laundry.

The project aimed to equip each community with first aid equipment according to Red Cross regulations (rucksack, first aid kit, stretcher, gloves, gauze, blood pressure monitor, glucometer, etc.), which will allow the practical use of the skills acquired in first aid courses in emergencies. So far, several basic first aid points have been set up, provided by trained persons from among the community members, in a number of 150 young people and adults between 18 and 40 years of age.

During the months of June-August this year, the Healthy Life Skills Camp sessions for children aged 6-16 years will resume in an exceptional setting at the Lake Pintea Tourist Complex.

Beneficiaries are consulted throughout the implementation of the project by collecting their feedback on the degree of knowledge of the project offer, the level of involvement in project activities, the adaptation of the means used to the level of understanding and interest of the beneficiaries, the adequacy of the content of the activities to the needs of the beneficiaries, suggestions for improvement or remedy of identified shortcomings.

The indicators that target the impact of the project on the beneficiaries have the following values: the number of Roma who have benefited from empowerment measures is 399, out of the target of 730, the number of Roma who have benefited from integrated services is 487 out of the target of 1250, the number of professionals trained in working with Roma is 15 out of the target of 15, the number of Roma experts and leaders trained in the defense of Roma rights is 15 out of the target of 15.
